Some winter between 1987 and 1989 I saw SKINNY PUPPY perform an incredible show in Portland, Oregon. They played so many songs from so many albums (and my being sick and running a high fever throughout the show), to this day I'm not sure which tour it was.. But it was AMAZING..
I think this was the tour Clive Barker was rumored to have contributed to for the stage design..

You got me.. I remember being so sick (standing in line, constantly slipping on the ice, shaking like a junkie as it started to snow FOR 2 HOURS before the doors opened up)I asked one of the security guys next to the stage to pull me out if I got much worse. I figured I could at least hold out front row center long enough to take some pics of a few of the sets. He was pretty cool - I lasted about 7 songs before I thought I was gonna pass out. He pulled me out just in time and I watched the rest of the show from the balcony. |
Nivek inside the Insect-Media-Machine-Demon-Thing
This thing was wild. It had insect like legs along its sides, each ending in an object of vice/addiction (syringes, liquor bottles, etc.) It had a TV for a head (there were TONS of tvs and projection screens all over the stage) and video camers inside its "chest" (where Nivek would every so often get swept inside) as well as outside its body. Sometimes the cams would be showing Nivek writhing around shrieking inside its belly, sometimes they would flash on the audience screaming all the lyrics with him. Sometimes all of the images on all of the screens would synchronise and show the same thing, if only for a few seconds, just in time to further emphasize a line or word. The over all effect was so utterly impressive its ruined me for bands that don't utilize multi-media in their shows..

After the show I ran into Dwayne and cEvin (and briefly Nivek, who was too stressed/messed up to want to deal with the small crowd of fans - not that I blame him). There was talk of going to Hamburger Marys and then a party.. |

I chatted briefly with cEvin, trying to contain my excitement that I was actually going to PARTY with these guys who had inspired and entertained me for so many years. Alas... When I caught up with my ride (I had commuted to the show from Corvallis, about 2 hours away, driving fast - in this weather about 4) they were not interested in doing anything but going home. Yes they understood we could go party with the band. No that did not seem as good an idea as driving home. If I hadn't been so sick that night I would have said screw it, and worried about how to get home the next day...
